STATES OF ALTERATION

James Bloom’s STATES OF ALTERATION dissects the intricate and often paradoxical interplay between technology, networks, and perception. Bloom interrogates the invisible forces shaping digital systems, revealing the fundamental instability and conditionality that influence our interactions within them.

Each project in this exhibition examines the evolving decentralized technologies, exploring how they shape artistic practices, external interaction, and meaning.

At the heart of Bloom’s work is transformation: the continuous recalibration of digital space in response to external conditions, whether market forces, collective engagement, or the technical realities of blockchain mechanics.

These artworks do not exist as fixed entities but as perpetually shifting states, unpredictable, self-referential, and shaped by the structures they critique.

STATES OF ALTERATION reveals a paradoxical truth: while blockchain systems aspire toward decentralization and openness, they also introduce new constraints, new architectures of control, impermanence, and conditionality.

By exposing these contradictions, Bloom’s work invites us to reconsider our assumptions about networked experience, proposing alternative ways of perceiving, inhabiting, and engaging with digital space.
